366 Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall

A Solo Exhibition

Beginning on January 1, 2020, I committed to drawing one mandala every day for the whole year. Little did I know that we would face a global pandemic, the murder of George Floyd and the death of so many others all during an election year. In addition to each mandala, I wrote every day. This collection of 366 mandalas and their corresponding journal writings* is a tribute to and reminder of all of that was lost to hatred, inequity and COVID. But, it is also a reminder of all that is good in the world— my story is a universal and intimate story of protest, triumph and love.

Var West is pleased to present, 366 Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Bela Suresh Roongta. Through the daily exploration of drawing and journaling*, Bela spent the entirety of 2020 illustrating her thoughts into an outline of a simple circle. In these 366
mandalas, we see an intricate daily record through small simple marks and others with a much more robust and labored hand. The writing*
that is paired with each mandala is much more direct, revealing Bela’s both relatable daily routine, and intimate correspondences*.

Because of the intimate nature of my daily writing, the journal entry paired with each mandala is not available online.  If you would like to see them in person, please contact me. You can also purchase my Limited Edition Artist Book, 366 Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall—  a Visual & Written Retrospective on 2020, featuring all 366 mandalas and writings here.

The first 30 mandalas were first displayed at the 30 x 30 x 30 Juried Group Exhibition, Var Gallery, Milwaukee, WI, 2022.
