Both of my parents were born in small villages in Rajasthan, India. They were married young joining together two families that would one day become mine and my sister’s. My mother has four brothers and sisters and my father, five. Between them my sister and I have four aunts, five uncles and twenty-four first cousins. We come from a big family. One that we did not know.
We did not know what it was like to see my parents be loved and cared for by their brothers and sisters. We did not know what it was like to have cousins to spend time with. To be looked after and look after. To be protected by and protect. We did not know what it was like to be a part of a big family. We did not know.
And, I wonder.
How different life would have been, if we had known?
